The running theme of January is, predictably, New Year's resolutions. Though health, fitness, and nutrition are about lifestyle choices that I work on on a daily basis throughout the year, the beginning of a new year always brings the subject to light with fresh eyes. What can I do this year to be more healthy? More realistically, what can I do today to be healthier than yesterday?
Though I don't really buy into health & fitness resolutions (because of the reasons above) that's not to say I don't think they're a great starting point for someone who has specific health & fitness goals in mind (I like specific and realistic goals because they are more likely to be achieved).

One of the comments I hear a lot when I tell people I'd like to become vegetarian or that I want to eat as sustainably as possible (including meat) is that they couldn't possibly cut out their favourite foods (like meat). Eating healthy should not be about deprivation, but replacing unhealthy habits with healthy ones that you can get genuinely excited about. I genuinely get excited about eating healthier... and about that delicious veg. recipe that I just can't wait to try (thanks to my friends who got me some awesome vegetarian cookbooks during the holidays)... or about the local, organic, ethically raised and killed animal that I decide to consume for sustenance today. I don't view my mostly vegetarian diet as depriving me of something better.
When it comes to fitness, especially when getting back to a regular fitness regimen or starting one for the first time ever, I truly believe exercising should feel like play. I'm lucky that I get to play at least three times a week (rock climbing, daily walks with the dogs, aerial silks, and yoga). They're all things that I've decided I want to commit my time to. If I'm going to commit that much time to it, I had better be enjoying it.
Happy Sunday.
